1000 Books In 10 Years; Vol. 210: Dali, by Robert Descharnes and Gilles Neret

Salvador Dali: His genius is as apparent as his arrogance, as one can tell when he title his autobiography: Diary of a Genius. His arrogance, I believe, was in part an act for the public.

The Taschen publishing company always does a superb job of putting together beautiful and affordable books that highlight the work of a variety of artists, and their Dali collection is no exception.  Put together by Robert Descharnes and Gilles Neret, the collection shares his complete paintings (though not his complete sketches, sadly Woman With Flower Head is not in the collection), and a variety of sketches and sculptures.   The book is largely a biographical and includes excerpts from some of Dali’s autobiographical work (The Secret Life of Salvador Dalí and Diary of a Genius) and also details some interesting anecdotes from Dali’s life.  If one is interested in reading analysis of Dali’s work, or a detailed biography, I’m not sure this is the work will satisfy, but if one is looking for a book that offers a comprehensive collection of Dali’s paintings, then this book is perfect for that.

The Persistence Of Memory (also known as Soft Watches) is perhaps Dali's most famous paintings and is on display at the Modern Museum of art on New York.

Though his bride Gala was often the muse and the subject of his later works, Dali also had his sister pose for him before he met Gala, and she did so for this painting.

Woman With Flower head is easily my favorite work by Dali.
